The open air zoo at Pinnawala will be opened today. The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Tourism and Sports Minister Navin Dissanayake, National Zoological Gardens Department Director General Anura de Silva told the Daily News yesterday.
The expenditure incurred on the Pinnawala Open Air Zoo is Rs. 850 million.This Open Air Zoo has been constructed targeting the tourism industry, he added.
De Silva said the construction of the open-air zoo commenced in 2000.
"It was stopped in 2002 and construction started officially in 2008. The open air zoo in 44 acres has been constructed adjacent to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage," he said.
This open-air zoo will showcase native animals. The zoo follows the global trend in specialised zoos that rear animals in environments simulating their natural ecological habitats.," de Silva said.
Highways and Investment Promotion Minister Kabir Hashim will also participate.
