Wesak whims barred

The police have decided not to grant permission for the use of dancing masks and putting up of haunted mansions (Holman Mandiraya) during the week of Wesak and on Wesak  Poya Day as these are detrimental to Buddhist culture and its tenets.

Gun totting soldier at Maithri's meeting arrested

The soldier who had allegedly had a weapon to the President’s meeting last month had been remanded till May 12, the Police said.

The soldier, Corporal Senaka Kumara, attached to the Commando Unit was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department officers (CID) last night and produced before the Agunukola Palassa Magistrate.

John Kerry arrived in Sri Lanka

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Sri Lanka a short while ago. It is the first time in a decade that a US secretary of state has visited Sri Lanka.The 35-member delegation was welcomed by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the air port. A senior State Department official, who briefed reporters on the visit, said Kerry's visit would focus on early efforts by Sirisena to advance democracy and human rights, tackle corruption, and launch a process of national reconciliation.
